The second of two historical documentaries presented by Pillars of the Earth author Ken Follett, in which he explores the facts behind the setting of his fictional works. Here he introduces three women whose resolve, intelligence and bravery shaped history at a time when females had few rights and were excluded from the priesthood, the military and universities. Follett begins with the story of 12th-century German nun Hildegard von Bingen, one of the inspirations behind the character of Caris in his novel World Without End.
